CPC

What is CPC?

CPC Driver Training Liverpool: CPC is an acronym for Certificate of Professional Competence and if you’re professionally operating a bus, coach or lorry then you must have your Initial Driver CPC certification. This certification lasts for five years and before it expires you must complete 35 hours of Periodic Training in order to renew it and keep driving professionally.  Be aware that you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving professionally without Driver CPC.

If you passed your car test after January 1997 and will be using your licence for work, you will need to undertake Initial Driver CPC Training. If you passed your car test before January 1997, and have a C1 or 7.5 ton entitlement on your licence, you do not need to take all four modules of the Initial Driver CPC Qualification, you only have to complete modules 2 and 4 of the course. There are some exemptions to people needing to have CPC certification. Click here to see a full list of exemptions from Driver CPC

If you drive any of the following vehicles as a means of your primary income, you must be legally CPC certified:

  • Tipper trucks
  • Buses – both regional and local
  • Coaches – both regional and continental
  • Bin lorries
  • Articulated lorries
  • Heavy construction equipment

Driver CPC training is split into two parts, Initial and Periodic.

Initial Driver CPC Training

All new drivers seeking to obtain their first Category C or Category D licence must undergo a complete training programme that includes Initial CPC Training. This will include preparation for the appropriate theory test as well as the practical skills instruction needed to pass the driver’s final two exams. The whole process combined, including all tests, is known as Initial CPC qualification and there are four modules to complete.

  1. Theory test
  2. Driver CPC case study test
  3. Driving ability test
  4. Driver CPC demonstration test

Further information about each element of the training can be found here.

Drivers must understand that they cannot obtain a commercial driving licence without completing Initial Driver CPC Training. At Abacus, we will support you through every step of the process and ensure that you qualify as a confident and skilled driver.  We use only highly trained and qualified instructors to guide you through training and we are very proud of our excellent pass rate.
